Andrew Begay is a master flute maker, wood sculptor and shaman. His work is steeped in the traditions of his people, the Dine Native American Indians. Now his powerfully spirited flutes and sharp, dynamic sculptures are treasured by players and collectors around the world. Andrew is of the Mud Clan, born for Red Streaking into Water People. Andrew grew up in Red Mesa, in the Navajo Nation, and was raised in a traditional Dine family. Andrews father is a shaman and very well respected elder of his people. Andrews grandfather introduced Andrew to the flute when he was 5 years old. Grandfather drew its name in the desert sand before him. Andrew read the word, the wind already erasing the markings. Grandfather said: I imagine you can make this, and learn to play one, too. This was the beginning of Andrews life journey, a journey whose purpose is to discover and share with the world the beauty of a voice that resonates from the depths of his ancient, almost lost, culture.
Andrew understood his elders stories as living prayers, urging him to go forward and to learn about himself and his Dine culture. He was to use the life of the flute as his guide and the sweat lodge as a way to move with spirit in prayer and healing.
Andrews work is infused with spirit and you will love him as your brother. Andrew creates flutes from the stories living inside wood. They make audible the living history of a People.Andrews flutes are bored and carved using traditional processes and modern interpretations, from a variety of woods and burls. Many are wood-burned with traditional Dine patterns, and inlaid with turquoise, pipestone, jet, coral, and mother of pearl. All are uniquely made, tuned to each flute's voice.
Andrew sees his work in wood, music, storytelling and sweat lodges as part of the same continuum and seeks to humbly serve the purpose given to him, to walk in beauty. This is a very rare opportunity to experience the richness of the Native American culture directly, with a man who, while steeped in tradition, has a modern experience of life, and the challenges inherent in being true to ones work. Perhaps this is Andrews greatest gift: simply by being himself, he brings the power, value and humour of his ancient, and wonderfully human, culture into full, electrifying, contact with ours.
